Orange County Flyers News Release
FULLERTON, Calif. (August 20, 2010) - One night after matching a franchise-record with 17 strikeouts, four Orange County Flyers pitchers duplicated the feat fanning 17 Yuma Scorpions, winning 11-0 on Friday night at Goodwin Field. Orange County matched a franchise record with the team's 10th consecutive win. The Flyers improved to 21-5 in the second half, 43-28 overall, while the Scorpions dropped their 11th straight game.
Starting pitcher Jesse Smith (5-3) earned the win with a career-high 10 strikeouts, allowing four hits over six scoreless innings of work. Cha-Seung Baek and Jake Renshaw combined to face the minimum six batters over the seventh and eighth innings, striking out three batters before turning the ball over to the newly acquired Matt Riley for the ninth inning.
Riley, who pitched in the Major Leagues for four years with the Orioles and Rangers, struck out four batters in the ninth inning. After the first batter he faced reached on a dropped third strike and the next batter walked, Riley struck out the next three Scorpions to end the game and bring the team's nightly strikeout total to 17 for the third time in franchise history.
Sergio Pedroza blasted his team-leading 12th homerun of the season, a two-run line drive over the right-center wall in the third inning, and Julian Benavidez added a solo homerun to lead off the third inning.
Jimmy Rohan added three singles to push his league-leading hit total to 112, tying him for the second-most hits in Flyers franchise history. Jermy Acey had 122 hits for Orange County in 2008.
The Orange County Flyers will try to set a new franchise record with an 11th consecutive win on Saturday in the third game of a three-game series against the Yuma Scorpions. Saturday the Flyers will be wearing special purple jerseys that will be available through a silent auction to raise money for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. First pitch on Saturday is at 7:05pm.
