Caps In Complete Command Against Calgary

August 21, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Edmonton Capitals News Release

Edmonton, AB - First baseman Tom Collaro drove in four runs, including a three-run home run, and starting pitcher Chris Little threw six shutout innings to pick up the win, as the Edmonton Capitals won their second straight game over the Calgary Vipers, 6-0 on Friday night at TELUS Field.

Collaro's seventh-inning blast into the scoreboard was the knockout blow for the Caps, who had a 3-0 lead going into the inning thanks to earlier runs knocked in by Collaro on a sacrifice fly, third baseman Alex Prieto on a walk with the bases loaded, and short stop Enrique Cruz with an RBI single. Cruz's single extended his hitting streak to an impressive 22 games, while centre fielder Ryan Stevenson scored three runs in the victory.

Little was also a game star for the Caps, picking up his sixth win of the season. Edmonton's bullpen came in and shut the Vipers down further after Little's exit, as Mike Hrynio, Ryan Paul and Jesse Oster teamed up to close out the shutout.

"These games are playoff games for us, and you can see that we've just stepped it up," Little said of the team's near-flawless performance. "We just put everything together tonight, and we have to keep doing that every night. We've got to keep proving that we want it more than them."

The Caps (15-15) need to keep beating the Vipers (21-9) if they want to finish in first place in the North Division in the second half and qualify for the Golden Baseball League's post-season. And they'll get that chance, as the provincial rivals play again Saturday at 7 p.m., Sunday with a double-header starting at 2 p.m. and Monday at 7 p.m.

Friday's game was the final edition of Safeway Fireworks Friday for the season, with a spectacular fireworks display held immediately following the final out. And coming up on Saturday is the last EZ Rock Saturday Night Movies of the year, as "The Rookie" will be played in centre field on a giant big screen following the game. Fans are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs and blankets, get comfortable and enjoy the show.

Sunday's double-header is an extra special day for the Caps, as it's Canadian Tire Fan Appreciation Day. In addition to getting two games for the price of one thanks to the double-header, there will be plenty of prizes up for grabs, including two $250 gift certificates, and other give-aways from Caps sponsors like United Cycle, Family Vision Care, Hudsons Canadian Tap House, Old Dutch and Booster Juice. It's also Edmonton Sun Autograph Sunday, as the entire Caps team will be available for autographs after the game.

The Capitals are Edmonton's first choice for professional baseball and family entertainment. Season seats start at less than $9 per game and are available pro-rated for the balance of the season. Individual game tickets are available for just $10 every game. Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster locations, the TELUS Field Box Office during regular business hours, by calling (780) 414-GOAL (4625) or online at capsbaseball.ca.
