Chico Outlaws News Release
Chico, CA- Despite signs of life from a struggling offense, the Chico Outlaws dropped their ninth consecutive home game at Nettleton Stadium on Friday night 6-5 to the Maui Na Koa Ikaika.
The Outlaws got a four-hit night from Mikael Jova, including a double and a two-RBI single, along with two runs scored, while second baseman Bobby Hill went 2 for 3 with two walks, the second consecutive night Hill has had a multi-hit game.
"Knuckle Princess" Eri Yoshida got the ball for her eighth start of the year, but the top of the first inning was not kind to the 18-year old from Japan. Four walks and a hit batter gave the Strong Warriors two runs as Yoshida threw over 40 pitches in the frame.
Chico cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the second inning when Jova doubled and eventually scored courtesy of two wild pitches from Maui starter Harold Williams (4-0).
Maui plated two more runs of Yoshida in the fourth, ending her night. With two outs, center fielder Fehlandt Lentini singled and stole second and third base. Paul Nishimura then walked, put two runners on and setting up GBL All-Star Gered Mochizuki's two-RBI single. Mochizuki's single extended his hit streak to 10 games. David Dinelli was summoned from the Chico bullpen and retired catcher Pete Farina to end the threat.
Kris Honel came in to the pitch the fifth and sixth innings and cruised through the fifth. Trouble started in the sixth when Honel walked Williams to lead off the frame; however, Williams was cut down stealing by catcher Robby Alcombrack. Honel then walked the next three batters to load up the bases. Garry Templeton brought in Josh Dew, who gave up an RBI single to Pete Farina, making the score 5-1. Honel, who came into the game leading the GBL in walks with 47, issued five walks in his inning and a third of work to raise his walk total to 52.
The Outlaws' bats came alive in the seventh inning with three base hits. After a one-out walk to pinch-hitter Mitch Einertson, Chico's Blake Gailen and Bobby Hill singled. After a JJ Sherrill fly ball out, Jova hit a two-RBI single to make the score 5-3.
Yosandy Ibanez made his home debut for the Outlaws after being acquired in the Mike Rose trade with Edmonton and got touched for a run in the eighth inning when Farina got an RBI hit, scoring Lentini who singled to lead off the inning, giving Maui a three-run lead at 6-3.
Na Koa Ikaika closer Jamie Vermilyea came in to pitch the ninth inning for the second consecutive day and it got interesting for the second straight night. One-out singles by Sherrill and Jova and a walk to Mark Samuelson loaded the bases. Third baseman Santo DeLeon hit into a fielder's choice to score Sherrill, making the score 6-4. Chico's next batter, Robby Alcombrack then hit a ground ball to shortstop Rex Rundgren, who threw wide of the first base bag, allowing Jova to score and making it a one-run game. Verimilyea ended the game with a ground ball of the bat of DeLeon as he hit into a 5-4 fielder's choice to force Alcombrack out.
Yoshida (0-4) took the loss, going 3.2 innings, allowing four earned runs on four hits, four walks and three hit batters.
Maui improved to 19-4 in the second half and 45-21 overall, while Chico falls to 14-15 in the second half, 47-27 overall.
