Muskegon Lumberjacks News Release
MIDDLETON, WI - Less than 24 hours after coming back from a 3-goal deficit in Chicago on Saturday night the Muskegon Lumberjacks (24-24-1-1, 50 pts.) used another comeback effort in Wisconsin to defeat the Madison Capitols (17-14-4-2, 40 pts.) 5-4 on Sunday afternoon.
Madison opened the scoring at the 2:06 mark on a turnover in the Lumberjacks zone. Shikhabudtin Gadzhiev (Makhachkala, RUS) left his crease to play the puck, but a capitol was the first to reach it behind the net. With the puck squirting into the slot Jack Brandt was able to corral it and slid it to the back of the net for his fifth goal of the season.
Muskegon responded at the 8:11 mark to tie the game 1-1. Teddy Spitznagel (New York, NY) held the puck in the far side corner of the Madison zone and put a shot on net to produce a rebound at the top of the crease. Fighting through bodies to get to the rebound Spitznagel was knocked to the ice, but still found a way to slide the puck across the goal line to tie the game.
With a power play moments later at the 10:14 mark Madison struck again to regain their lead to carry into the intermission. Chris Delaney sent the puck from the near side corner up the wall to Shawn Ramsey at the blue line. Ramsey fired a pass across the zone to Austin Burnevik who one-timed a shot past the goalie and into the net for his 24th goal of the season.
The Jacks tied the game in the second period with a power play goal of their own. Matvei Gridin (Kurgan, RUS) sent the puck from the near side of the blue line across the zone to Ethan Whitcomb (St. Catherines, ON, CAN) who then tapped it to the middle of the slot for Easton Young (Grand Rapids, MN). The defenseman one-timed a shot to the back of the net to make it 2-2.
A pretty goal from Andrew Kuzma regained the Madison lead at the 13:29 mark when he used his speed to split the Lumberjacks defenseman and roof the puck to the top of the net while in tight on a break away.
Needing a third period comeback the Lumberjacks answered the bell. Sacha Boisvert (Trois-Rivieres, QC, CAN) didn't waste much time in the period before tying the game. After his stick broke in the defensive zone the Lumberjacks Equipment Manager gave him a new one from the bench allowing Boisvert to join the rush and lead a 2-on-1 rush to the offensive zone. Using his teammate as a decoy Boisvert ripped a shot past the netminder just 28 seconds into the frame.
Boisvert then scored again while on a penalty kill after Gridin caused a turnover in the neutral zone. Gridin tapped the puck to Boisvert behind the defense who then went forehand to backhand to beat the netminder giving the Jacks a 4-3 lead just 2:35 into the third period.
Looking for a little insurance the Jacks struck again to make it a 5-3 game with 9 minutes remaining in regulation. Cody Croal (North Branch, MN) took the puck at the Jacks blue line and slid a pass up the middle of the ice to Connor who like Boisvert was behind the defense. Also like Boisvert Connor when forehand to back hand to beat the netminder for his 17th goal of the season.
Madison got one back with the net empty when Burnevik netted a second one-timer from the far side circle, but it wasn't enough as the Jacks held on for the final 20 seconds to clinch the second come from behind win of the weekend.
Gadzhiev (5-4) earned the win by making 33 saves on 37 shots fired his way. Patriks Berzins (8-8-2-0) earned the loss on his record with 26 saves on 31 Lumberjacks shots.
The Jacks return home to trinity Health Arena next weekend for a two game series against the Youngstown Phantoms on Friday and Saturday night. Puck drop for both games is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST.
