Birmingham Barons News Release
Birmingham, AL - The Birmingham Barons dropped their second game in a row to the Mobile BayBears Thursday, falling by a score of 5-0 in front of 8,503 fans at Regions Field.
A season-long issue continued Thursday for the Barons, giving up three runs in the first on RBI doubles by David Peralta and Raywilly Gomez against starter Chris Beck (2-4, 5.63). In 27 games so far in 2014, the Barons have been outscored 30-11 in the first inning.
The lead would grow to 5-0 in the fifth on an RBI double by David Peralta and a bases loaded walk to Gomez. Manager Julio Vinas disagreed with the home plate umpire's ruling on a potential third strike in the inning and was tossed from the ballgame, his first ejection of the season. Beck was pulled after allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits over 4.2 IP.
The Barons would muster just three hits againstBayBears starter Chase Anderson (4-2, 0.69) who struck out seven over 7.1 shutout innings while picking up his 4th win of the season.
Micah Johnson recorded one of the Barons' four hits on the night, leading off the game with a base hit and extending his hitting streak to five games. He would also steal his team-leading 9th base of the season in the inning, swiping third without a throw.
The crowd of 8,503 was the fourth-highest in Regions Field history and represented the 8th sellout in the first 81 games at the new downtown ballpark.
The shutout loss was the third for the Barons this season and dropped their record to 11-15 while Mobile improved to 17-10. The Barons will look to rebound tomorrow night as they send RHP Myles Jaye (0-3, 5.63) to the hill in game two against LHP Andrew Chaffin (2-0, 1.21). First pitch is scheduled for a 7:05 PM CDT.
