JACKSON, TENN. - The Jackson Generals once again got early offense and solid pitching and took the second game of this five-game set with the Pensacola Blue Wahoos 5-1 in Jackson Thursday night. The Generals have out-scored the Wahoos 10-1 over the first two contests.

The Generals scored two runs in the first and one more in the second to lead 3-0 after two innings for the second night in a row. Ketel Marte (1-4, 1 R) led off the bottom of the first with a double. He was followed by a double off the right field wall by Leon Landry (1-4, 1 R). Marte had to hold on the fly ball and only advanced to third. It would not be a problem for Jackson as the next batter, Kevin Rivers (0-3, 1 RBI), scored Marte on a sacrifice fly to right field. Two batters later John Hicks (0-2, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB) hit a sacrifice fly to center and that scored Landry for the early 2-0 lead.

With two outs in the bottom of the second, Nate Melendres (1-3, 1 HR, 1 R, 1 RBI) hammered his first home run of the season to give the Generals a 3-0 advantage. After that, Blue Wahoo starting pitcher Robert Stephenson settled down and found his groove retiring 11 of the next 12 batters he faced after the home run to Melendres. Stephenson then gave up a double and a walk to in the bottom of the sixth. The Reds top pitching prospect was relieved by Tim Adleman who walked the first batter he faced in the game. After Adleman struck out Ramon Morla (0-3), Generals newcomer Manny Pina (1-3, 2 RBI) singled up the middle. The base hit scored Dan Paolini (1-3, 1 R, 1 BB) and John Hicks (0-2, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB) to give Jackson a 5-0 lead.

Pensacola finally got on the board 18 innings into the series. Rey Navarro reached on an error to lead off the ninth. He scored on a single by Ross Perez and the Blue Wahoos were down 5-1. Stephen Shackleford (3-1, 5.97 ERA) got out of the jam with no further damage and preserved the 5-1 Generals win.

Starter Joshi Ogando (0-2, 6.97 ERA) tossed four innings of shutout baseball before giving way to the bullpen. Jordan Shipers (0-2, 4.42 ERA) and Richard Vargas (0-0, 3.38 ERA) went a combined 2.1 in relief, handing the shutout to Shackleford. The only run of the game was unearned and Shackleford picked up his third win on the season.

The Generals and Blue Wahoos will be back in action Friday at the Ballpark in Jackson where Jackson will try to take the first three games of this series and their fourth win in a row overall. Jon Moscot (1-1, 2.08 ERA) is scheduled to start for Pensacola while Trevor Miller (0-3, 5.40 ERA) will start for Jackson. Game time is set for 7:05pm. Friday is Flat Screen Friday with a lucky fan leaving with a 50 inch television.
