Andersen Stellar in Net as Admirals Snap Binghamton

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Frederik Andersen made 39 saves to lead the Norfolk Admirals (10-12-0-0) to a 3-1 victory over the Binghamton Senators (13-5-1-1) on Saturday night from the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. The Admirals, who have won three of their last four games, snapped Binghamton's franchise-record nine-game winning streak.

Kyle Palmieri, Jordan Hendry and Brandon McMillan scored for the Admirals. Andersen (7-6-0) stopped all 29 shots he faced in the final two periods. Norfolk killed all three Senator power plays, increasing their streak of opponent power plays killed to 33 over the last five-plus games.

The Admirals will return to Scope on Friday and Saturday nights to battle the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

Norfolk took a 1-0 lead 7:32 into the first period. Sami Vatanen sent a shot from right circle that was blocked away into the left circle. Palmieri found it there and sent the rebound past Binghamton backstop Robin Lehner for his ninth goal of season.

The Senators tied the game at 1-1 just under seven minutes later with their AHL-leading eighth shorthanded goal of the season. Derek Grant picked off a Norfolk pass in the left corner, skated towards the goalmouth and sent a backhand shot past Andersen at 14:30.

The Admirals re-claimed the lead 6:35 into the second period. Peter Holland won a faceoff back to Hendry in high slot. Hendry sent a shot through traffic that was deflected on its way through Lehner's legs for Hendry's second goal of the season and a 2-1 Norfolk lead.

Norfolk's lead doubled late in the second period. McMillan attempted a wraparound shot from behind the net near Lehner's right side. The puck hit Lehner's pad, bounced towards the low slot, pinballed off the skate of Troy Bodie and went right back to McMillan, who one-timed it past Lehner's right skate at 17:48 for his third goal of the season.

Andersen turned aside all 13 shots he faced in the third period and nearly scored an empty-net goal when his shot hit the outside of the left post of the Binghamton net. Nevertheless, the Admirals held on for the 3-1 lead.

Lehner (8-3-1) stopped 32 of 35 shots in the setback.

Norfolk was 0-for-5 on the power play. Binghamton was 0-for-3.

The Admirals return to Scope on Friday and Saturday against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. Friday night's game is the Admirals' annual Toy Toss. Admirals fans are asked to bring new stuffed toys to that game to throw onto the ice after the Admirals score their first goal. Toys will be collected for the U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots.

Also, the first 2,000 fans through the gates will receive the first set of 2012-13 Admirals trading cards, courtesy of Michael and Son Services and JPM Financial Services/John's Tax Service.
