Anaheim Ducks Sign Defenseman Matt Smaby

Syracuse, NY (July 14, 2011) - The Syracuse Crunch announced today that the Anaheim Ducks have signed defenseman Matt Smaby to a one-year contract. As per club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Smaby, 26, appeared in 32 games with the Tampa Bay Lightning last season, going scoreless while collecting 17 penalty minutes and a +2 rating. In addition, he skated in seven games with the Norfolk Admirals last year, tallying two assists and nine penalty minutes. Smaby has appeared in 122 career NHL games since the 2007-08 season, all with Tampa Bay, notching six assists and 106 penalty minutes. Over that span, he has also skated in 156 combined AHL games with Springfield and Norfolk, recording 30 points (5g, 25a) and 148 penalty minutes.

Prior to turning pro, the 6-4, 240-pound blueliner spent three years at the University of North Dakota (WCHA) from 2003-06, registering 29 points (6g, 23a) and 280 penalty minutes in 127 games. He captained the Fighting Sioux to consecutive Frozen Four appearances in 2005 and 2006. A native of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Smaby was selected by Tampa Bay in the second round, 41st overall, in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.
