Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release

Bridgeport, CT - A three-run homer from Bridgeport centerfielder Adam Greenberg in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Bluefish a series clinching 6-5 win over the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs on Monday afternoon at Harbor Yard infront of 2,139 fans.

Southern Maryland looked as if they had this one in the bag. After Bridgeport got a bases-loaded walk from third baseman Angel Chavez to take a 1-0 lead, the Blue Crabs exploded for five runs in the third. With two out and nobody aboard, centerfielder Adam Godwin and second baseman Brandon Pinckney singled to put runners at first and third. Designated hitter Brian Barton then stepped in and laced a single to left to tie the game.

Third baseman Travis Garcia (12) followed that with a three-run homer over the leftfield wall to give the Blue Crabs a 4-1 lead. First baseman Casey Benjamin (10) followed suit with a solo homer of his own, which gave the Blue Crabs their largest lead of the game at 5-1.

The Bluefish inched their way back into the game by scoring an unearned run in the fourth, before and RBI double by first baseman Wes Bankston pulled the Bluefish to within 5-3 in the fifth.

Things stayed that way until the ninth when the league's saves leader Jim Ed Warden tried to finish the game for the Blue Crabs. He retired the first man he faced before allowing singles to shortstop Felix Molina and Chavez, which set the stage for Greenberg's heroics. It was Greenberg's eighth homer of the season and his first hit of the game. It was only Warden's third blown save of the season and it was the second time that the Blue Crabs have lost a game when leading after eight innings this season (36-2).

Southern Maryland got a 2-5 performance from Godwin who also scored a run. The Bluefish got two hits apiece from second baseman Andres Perez, designated hitter Brock Peterson and Bankston who also doubled and drove in a run.

Bluefish reliever, and former Blue Crab, Kyle Zaleski (2-0) got the win for Bridgeport after pitching two scoreless innings of relief. Warden (1-4) took the loss.

The Blue Crabs head home to begin a six-game home stand with the Road Warriors on Tuesday at 7:05. The Blue Crabs will send right Virgil Vasquez (6-6, 4.99 ERA) to the bump against a to-be-determined pitcher for the Road Warriors. The game can be heard on www.somdbluecrabs.com.
