Greenberg Goes Yard in Walkoff Win

(Bridgeport, Conn. - August 8, 2011) - Adam Greenberg sent a three-run walkoff shot to right against Jim Ed Warden (1-4), in the ninth, to lead the Bridgeport Bluefish (16-7, 48-38) to a 6-5 comeback victory against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (7-17, 43-44). Bridgeport has won 15 of the last 19 games.

In the ninth, with one out, Felix Molina singled to center and Angel Chavez singled to right. The next batter was the hero of the game. Greenberg served Ed Warden's pitch over the wall to give Bridgeport the first series win against the Blue Crabs this season.

The scoring began when Bridgeport produced a run in the second; but Southern Maryland responded in the top the third by scoring five runs.

All the runners scored with two outs. Adam Godwin and Brandon Pinckney singled to set up runners at the corners. A Brian Barton single to left tied the contest at one. Travis Garcia lifted a three-run homer to left just beyond the reach of outfielder Steve Moss. The shot was the first of two consecutive home runs as Casey Benjamin sent a solo drive to right. After the inning, Southern Maryland had a four run advantage. It was the largest lead of the game.

The Bluefish, though, started their charge by pushing runs across in the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth, Brock Peterson smacked a double to rightcenter and advanced to third on a Luis Rodriguez single. On the play, there was a throwing error from Kody Kirkland in left to push Peterson to the plate.

With one out in the fifth, Andres Perez extended his hit streak to 15 consecutive games with a double. After a second out had been recorded and Perez advanced to third, Wes Bankston smacked a double to rightcenter to cut the deficit to two. The last part of the comeback involved Greenberg's shot.

Nick Green had a strong outing for Southern Maryland as the righthanded starter allowed two earned runs in seven innings; but he did not factor in the decision A trio of pitchers relieved in the eighth before Ed Warden gave up three runs and got one Bridgeport batter out.

Wardell Starling struggled in the third, but pitched seven innings and allowed five runs. Kyle Zaleski (2-0) came out of the bullpen and tossed two scoreless frames to earn the win.

The Bluefish start a series on Long Island against the Ducks on Tuesday.
