Rochester Americans News Release
(Rochester, NY) The Rochester Americans fell 6-1 to the Syracuse Crunch tonight at the War Memorial at Oncenter in the second leg of a home-and-home series between the two teams. Despite an early goal from Rochester's Karl Stewart, Syracuse would score six consecutive goals from six different goal scorers to earn its second win of the season.
Stewart opened the scoring with an unassisted goal at the 4:46 mark of the first period to register his first goal/point as an Amerk. Second-year netminder Tyler Plante made his first start of the season, earning five saves and allowing three goals before being relieved by Chris Beckford-Tseu. The goaltending duo made a combined 18 saves in the losing effort.
The Crunch were led offensively with three-point performances from Mike York (0+3) and Tom Sestito (1+2) to earn third and second star honors, respectively. Dan LaCosta and Sebastian Dahm split time between the pipes for the hometown Crunch, making a combined 29 saves to preserve the win for Syracuse.
After Stewart gave the Amerks an early 1-0 lead, Syracuse quickly responded with four goals in exactly seven minutes from Maksim Mayorov, Nikita Filatov, Sestito and Adam Pineault to give the Crunch a 4-1 lead at the end of the first period.
Steve Kelly notched his first goal of the season at 7:24 of the second period to extend the Crunch lead to 5-1. Derek MacKenzie scored 10 minutes later for a 6-1 Crunch lead to take the two-game set.
Opening weekend concludes for Rochester on Sunday, October 12th as the Binghamton Senators make their first trip to The Blue Cross Arena this season. The 6:05 p.m. contest will be broadcast live on SportsRadio 1280 WHTK and whtk.com.
