Manitoba Moose News Release

The Manitoba Moose were seeking vengeance for Friday night's 3-1 loss to the Hamilton Bulldogs, but unfortunately couldn't get the payback they sought dropping Saturday's rematch 5-3. Defenseman Nolan Baumgartner and winger Pierre-Cedric Labrie earned their first goals of the season, while Michel Ouellet and Jason Krog extended their point streak to two games, but it wouldn't be enough to take down the Bulldogs in front of 6442 fans at the MTS Centre.

Energized by the desire to notch their first win, the Moose spent much of the first few minutes of the game in the Bulldogs zone, but a handful of misdirected shots kept the shot-total low.

A cross-checking penalty to Hamilton's Greg Stewart gave the Moose the game's first powerplay, but the Bulldog's penalty killers looked sharp, allowing only two-shots on the man-advantage.

With both teams at even strength Hamilton would be the first to hit the scoreboard as centre David Desharnais snuck past both defenders and snapped his first of the season over Manitoba's new goaltender, Karl Goehring. With little recovery time for the Moose, the Bulldogs extended their lead 50 seconds later as defenseman Pavel Valentenko's shot from the point was completed by Ryan White, putting their club up by two.

At 10:18, the Moose duo, that was responsible for last night's only goal, found the net again. With a pass from former Tampa Bay Lightning, Michel Ouellet, Jason Krog was able to break Marc Denis, tightening the gap at 2-1.

The last three-minutes of the second and first-minute of the third would host one less Moose player, as Zack FitzGerald served four-minutes for high-sticking.

Second intermission didn't slow down the Bulldog's momentum and being on the powerplay didn't hurt either. Twenty-four seconds into the middle-frame, Yannick Weber found the back of the net in his team's 13th shot of the game.

At 5:31, Manitoba defenseman Daniel Rahimi gave the visitors their second five-on-four with a hooking fine. Seconds later, Hamilton went two-for-two on the powerplay with Brock Trotter's rebound, surpassing their goal count from last night, 4-1.

With four-minutes left to go in the second, a shot from Ouellet would offer Nolan Baumgartner an open back door to earn his first of the season, inching closer at 4-2.

Entering the third the Moose proved they weren't leaving without a fight, scoring a goal within the first three minutes. Pierre-Cedric Labrie's slap shot from the point hit the net and put the Moose in ear-shot of a tied game.

At 7:12 Ben Maxwell threw a kink in the Moose's plan by scoring an unassisted goal on Goehring. The goal was in question for a moment and then confirmed leaving Moose fans unhappy with the final decision.

With the clock ticking down, the Moose opted for an extra attacker, pulling Goehring from his net with 1:00 remaining. But six skaters and a 12-shot lead wasn't enough for the Moose to earn a point, and Hamilton produced their second win of the season 5-3 over the Moose.
