Amerks Announce 2008 Reading Power Play Winners
February 19, 2008 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Rochester Americans News Release
(Rochester, NY)... The Rochester Americans announced today that second-grader Hunter Lyng and seventh-grader Jason Fersaci are this year's winners of the third annual Amerks Reading Power Play program.
Lyng, of Lima, and Fersaci, of Webster, were selected from over 100 candidates, ranging from grades K-12. The two lucky winners and their families will enjoy dinner in the President's lounge and will have the opportunity to watch the Amerks take on the Albany River Rats from the Amerks suite Wednesday night at The Blue Cross Arena. Additionally, Lyng and Fersaci will each get to perform the ceremonial puck drop prior to the 7:05 p.m. contest.
The reading campaign took place from November to February and consisted of 26 appearances from the Amerks players and The Moose to libraries in and around the Monroe County area. The visiting player reads to the youth and gives a hockey demonstration. Each appearance also featured a raffle for Amerk memorabilia and an autograph session by the visiting player and The Moose.
The second half of the Reading Power Play, which began on December 5th, is a reading program that uses the successful incentive formula employed in summer reading programs. Using the hat trick as a thematic vehicle, youth participants filled out a form for every three books they read, which qualified them for an entry in the grand prize drawing.
Rochester's week begins on Wednesday, February 20th as the Amerks host the Albany River Rats at The Blue Cross Arena. The 7:05 p.m. contest is the second and final meeting this season between the two teams and will be broadcast live on Hot Talk 1280 WHTK, whtk.com and B2 networks. The game will also be televised live on Time Warner SportsNet Channel 26.
Wednesday's contest falls on College Night. Students can show their college ID at the Box Office and receive a $16.00 ticket for $10.00 or a $12.00 ticket for just $8.00. The game will also be host to Family Night. All Rochester area school children, teachers, school employees, administrators and all families can purchase specially priced tickets. Contact Tom Winslow at (585) 454-5335, ext. 3005 for more information. Additionally, the first 6,000 fans will receive light-up maracas courtesy of Time Warner.
