Allen Americans News Release
Allen, Texas - For the second time in four days, the Allen Americans and Wichita Thunder went to a shootout to decide the game and tonight it was Wichita getting the extra point, 6-5 at Allen Event Center.
Just like Sunday afternoon, the Allen Americans found themselves down two goals late in the third period by the exact score of 5-3, and for the second game in a row the Americans battled back to even the score, as Gary Steffes recorded the latest regulation goal in team history, scoring with 0.9 seconds left in the third period to even the game at 5-5. It was Steffes' second goal of the game and his league-leading 33rd goal of the season.
The Americans were awarded a power play in overtime, as Justin Bernhardt was called for holding at 2:33 of the extra session, but the Americans were unable to put one past Tim Boron sending the game to a shootout.
Todd Hosmer ended the game in the extra session; the seventh Wichita shooter found the back of the net to secure the extra point and sent Allen to its fourth straight home loss, the longest such streak of the season.
Allen finished 1-7 with the man advantage, while Wichita was 2-9. Gary Steffes connected on his league leading 13th power play goal of the season in the first period, for the only Americans power play goal.
"We had our chances in overtime, but we didn't cash in," said Americans Assistant Coach Erik Adams, who joined the Americans Post Game Show. "Give our players a lot of credit for battling back, but in the end we made some costly mistakes that put us in some bad positions."
The Allen Americans hit the road for Kansas City tomorrow and play on Friday night against the Missouri Mavericks. The Americans next home game is Sunday at 4:05 pm against Tulsa.
