March 3, 2010 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Allen Americans News Release

ALLEN, Texas - The Allen Americans and Allen Event Center Community Ice Rink, in conjunction with the Allen Police and Fire Departments, are proud to announce the first ever Police vs. Fire On Ice matchup. The Allen Police Department will be facing off against the Allen Fire Department before the Americans' last regular season game March 20 at the Allen Event Center.

The Police vs. Fire On Ice game begins at 5:00 p.m., while the Americans contest against the Amarillo Gorillas starts at 7:30 p.m.

The two city departments have battled each other in other sports, but this will mark the first time the organizations will face off on the ice. While some police officers and firefighters have experience playing hockey, others will be trying out the sport for the first time.

Part of the proceeds from the game will benefit two charities the departments work with closely=8Bthe Allen Public Safety Recovery Fund (Allen Fire Department) and the Special Olympics of Texas (Allen Police Department).

"We'd like to thank the Allen Americans for this opportunity to raise money for a worthy cause. We also love that we get the chance to go out on the ice and bang a few cops around without getting into trouble," Allen Fire Department Chief Bill Hawley said Wednesday.

The charity game will consist of two 20-minute periods, and each team will be comprised of 15 to 18 players. Both clubs will be wearing special jerseys designed for the inaugural Police vs. Fire On Ice game.

"This hockey game is a great way to support the Public Safety Recovery Fund and the Special Olympics of Texas. It demonstrates to the public that their police officers and firefighters are a part of the community and shows us in a different light outside of our day-to-day duties," Police Chief Bill Rushing said.

"The game is also a camaraderie builder between the police officers and firefighters who rarely get to interact outside of work. It is our goal that everyone, from our children to community leaders, have an opportunity to come out and have fun with their police and fire departments while bringing attention and funding to two great causes."

The Allen Event Center Community Ice Rink is donating ice time for practices, as well as providing skate instructors. Allen Americans coaches and players help during practice sessions, too. Media are welcome at all practices.

The police officers and firefighters have already had their first two practices. The remaining practices are as follows:

Wednesday, March 3 - 8:45 p.m. - 9:45 p.m.

Wednesday, March 10 - 8:45 p.m. - 9:45 p.m.

Monday, March 15 - 9:30 p.m. - 10:30 p.m.

Thursday, March 18 - 9:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.
