Rochester Americans News Release
(Rochester, NY)... The American Hockey League President and CEO David Andrews and the league's Board of Governors announced today the schedule format for the 2008-09 season.
Rochester (24-46-6-4, 58 points) finished the season at the bottom of the North Division, which was seven points behind the sixth-place Lake Erie Monsters (26-41-6-7, 65 points).
In 2008-09, the Amerks will remain in the seven-team Western Conference's North Division. The division includes Rochester, Hamilton, Manitoba, Grand Rapids, Toronto, Lake Erie, and thruway rival, Syracuse. Fans will also have a chance to watch 18 of the league's 29 teams at The Blue Cross Arena.
This season, the Rochester Americans' unbalanced 80-game schedule features 62 games against Western Conference opponents. The Amerks' divisional schedule includes six games against Lake Erie and Grand Rapids, while Rochester will battle Hamilton, Manitoba and Toronto in eight different occasions. Rochester still plays Syracuse 12 times.
In addition, Rochester will play 14 games against the Western Conference's West Division, which has produced four of the last seven Calder Cup winners. The West Division slate includes two games against Chicago, Houston, Iowa, Peoria, San Antonio, Quad City and Rockford.
In the Eastern Conference, the Amerks play a total of 18 games. The contests are sprinkled among five teams. The Amerks play geographical rival Binghamton eight times and have two games each against Hershey, Providence and Manchester. Rochester will play Albany four times this season.
In operation since 1936, the AHL continues to serve as the top development league for all 30 National Hockey League teams. More than 84 percent of today's NHL players are American Hockey League graduates, and for the seventh year in a row, more than six million fans attended AHL games across North America in 2007-08.
