Amarillo Falls to Wichita Despite Best Effort of Season

October 27, 2003 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Amarillo Gorillas News Release

AMARILLO, TX – The Amarillo Gorillas gritty and determined effort on Saturday night was thwarted by two late Wichita Thunder goals on Saturday night in a 3-2 loss at The Jungle.

The Gorillas trailed 1-0 midway through the second period, when Ryan Shannon capitalized on Thunder goaltender Mark Gowan's miscue to tie the game up at 1-1. In the third period, defenseman Tyler Butler netted his second of the season when he blasted a shot into the Wichita net to make it 2-1. Derrell Upton and Derek Hahn notched assists on the one-timer.

But the Thunder potted two goals in the final 10 minutes of the game and held on in the end to post the 3-2 victory.

Gorillas rookie goaltender Jamie Vandespyker played well despite the loss, making some key saves including on a breakaway when he stopped Thunder power forward Ryan Calder.

The Amarillo Gorillas faced off their 2003-2004 home schedule on Friday night when they hosted the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees. The Gorillas ran into a hot goaltender in Jeff Levy and could not beat him as RGV picked up its first win in franchise history with the final of 3-0.
