SCORPIONS RECAP -
WICHITA 4, SCOPIONS 3 - Peter Ambroziak recorded a natural hat trick in a 6:11 span of the third period but it wasn't quite enough as Wichita held on for a 4-3 win over the Scorpions on Friday. The Thunder broke the game open with three goals in the second period before Ambroziak's heroics fell just short. Danny Lorenz made 12 saves in the first two periods before giving way to rookie Miguel Beaudry. Walker McDonald added two assists for the Scorpions.
BOSSIER-SHREVEPORT 2, SCORPIONS 0 - In a goaltending duel of late-season proportions, the Mudbugs' Ken Carroll barely outdueled Scorpions rookie Miguel Beaudry in a 2-0 Bossier-Shreveport win on Saturday. Forbes MacPherson broke the Scorpions' perfect streak on the penalty kill at 15 by scoring on a two-man advantage midway through the second period. Chad Spurr added a goal late in the frame. Carroll stopped all 30 Scorpions shots while Beaudry turned away 33 of 35 Mudbugs chances.
SCORPIONS MATCH-UPS -
SAN ANGELO - The Scorpions and Saints square off for the first of three meetings this season on Tuesday. San Angelo comes into tomorrow's game after a 4-1 victory over Odessa on Saturday, making them 2-0 on home ice so far. Newcomer Ryan Finnerty (3g-3a) and returnee Trevor Weisgerber (1g-5a) have teamed up for six points apiece through the first five games. Defenseman Derek Booth leads all CHL blueliners with three goals. The Saints have a solid goaltending tandem with returnee Scott Reid (2-1-0, 2.63 GAA) sharing time with newcomer Brant Nicklin (1-1-0, 1.29 GAA). Nicklin was a teammate last year of Scorpions center Clint Wensley with Rockford of the UHL. San Angelo is the CHL's least penalized team, averaging 13.8 PIM through their first five games.
COLORADO - The Eagles are 1-3-0 after their first four games, dropping a pair of weekend contests at Oklahoma City and Tulsa. Colorado is an experienced lot, with five players (forwards Greg Pankewicz, Ryan Tobler and Phil Crowe, defenseman Brent Thompson and goalie Ryan Bach) boasting NHL experience. Tobler and injured Riley Nelson lead the Eagles with four points in four games. Colorado's power play, expected to be a strong suit, has struggled to 16th in the league at 5.9 percent. Bach is 1-3-0 with a 3.04 GAA in starting every game thus far.
LUBBOCK - The Cotton Kings dropped a pair of games over the weekend to Odessa and Rio Grande Valley after winning their season opener. Newcomers J-F Labarre (2g-2a) and Chris Duggan (1g-3a) lead the way offensively for new coach Kirk Tomlinson. The Cotton Kings lead the league in penalty minutes so far, racking up 37.3 PIM per game. Goalie Mike Brusseau is 1-1-0 thus far with a 3.00 GAA while rookie Kevin Fines is 0-1-0 with a 2.01 GAA. New Mexico faces Lubbock ten times this season, most of any team along with Colorado.
HAT TRICK HAPPENINGS - After recording one hat trick all last season, the Scorpions have literally turned the trick twice already this season. Ben Gorewich did so in the season opener at Corpus Christi on Oct. 16, and Peter Ambroziak notched his sixth hat trick in a Scorpions uniform on Friday at Wichita. The hat trick was Ambroziak's first since Dec. 15, 2001 against San Antonio and his first natural hat trick (three unanswered goals) since Dec. 10, 1999 against Lubbock. Ambroziak scored three times in a 6:11 span of the third period to accomplish one of hockey's rarest feats.
BEAUDRY'S BRICK WALL - Rookie Miguel Beaudry has been an early season bright spot for coach Bill McDonald's team. The 21 year-old native of Verner, Ontario has allowed just two goals in each of his first two starts but unfortunately has yet to come up with a win. He ranks fifth in the CHL with a 1.75 GAA and is tied for third with a .951 save percentage.
STINGERS - The Scorpions' five-game season-opening road trip is their longest since a seven-game jaunt to begin the 2001-02 campaign. New Mexico was the last CHL team to allow a power play goal, and still has not allowed a 5-on-4 goal against. The Scorpions are third overall on the penalty kill at 94.1 percent. Winger Walker McDonald recorded his first multi-point game with the Scorpions by assisting on Peter Ambroziak's first two goals on Friday at Wichita, where he played during parts of the 1998-99 and 1999-00 seasons. Erik Adams is tied for sixth among CHL defensemen with four points in as many games.
