Altoona Tops Trenton 9-4 On Thursday

(Altoona, PA)- Altoona Third baseman Pedro Alvarez hit two home runs, and the Curve came-from-behind to top Trenton 9-4 on Thursday night from Blair County Ballpark in Altoona, PA. Altoona swept the three-game series and won the season-series over the Thunder 5-4. New Britain lost on Thursday night to Connecticut, so Trenton remains three games behind New Britain for second place in the Northern Division with 11 games to go in the season.

Down 4-3, Altoona (58-73) tied the game at 4-4 in the seventh inning on a solo home run by Alvarez off of Thunder Reliever Eric Wordekemper (1-2). The home run was Alvarez's second of the game. It was his first multi-home run game for Altoona. Later in the inning, Catcher Steve Lerud came through with a two-out bases-loaded two-run single to put Altoona on top 6-4. Left fielder Jeff Corsaletti capped off the scoring with an RBI single to make it 7-4. Altoona batted around in the four-run inning. Altoona scored two insurance runs in the eighth inning. Right fielder Jonel Pacheco had a sacrifice fly RBI and Designated Hitter Jason Delany connected on an RBI single. Alvarez went 3 x 5 in the three runs, two home runs, and three RBI in the win for the Curve. Pacheco had three doubles in the win for the Curve.

Trenton (63-67) had broken a 3-3 tie with a run in the sixth inning. With two outs in the frame, Third baseman Marcos Vechionacci walked against Altoona Reliever Yoslan Herrera. Second baseman Justin Snyder followed with a double. The double was mishandled by Altoona Right fielder Jonel Pacheco which allowed Vechionacci to score. Pacheco was charged with an error on the play.

Trenton took a 1-0 lead in the first inning against Altoona Starting Pitcher Donald Veal. After Center fielder Austin Krum was hit by a pitch to start the game, Shortstop Eduardo Nunez delivered a double to plate Krum and give the Thunder the lead. Altoona tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI triple by Designated Hitter Jason Delaney. Trenton responded with two runs in the top of the third inning. First baseman Chris Malec connected on a two-run home run to give the Thunder a 3-1 lead. But, Altoona came right back with two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Alvarez hit his first home run of the night, a two-run shot off of Thunder Starting Pitcher Lance Pendleton, to knot the score at 3-3.

Pendleton received a no-decision. He scattered three runs and nine hits over six innings. In a rehab start, Veal went two innings and allowed only two hits and one run. Herrera (11-1) relieved Veal and yielded five hits and three runs (two earned) over five innings to notch his second win against the Thunder this season. Wordekemper surrendered six runs and five hits over 1 1/3 innings to take the loss. Nunez had two more hits for the Thunder and went 8 x 13 in the series.

Trenton returns to Waterfront Park on Friday night to start a four-game series against the New Britain Rock Cats (Double-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins). LHP Jeremy Bleich (3-6, 6.47) will start for Trenton against New Britain RHP Cole DeVries (7-13, 4.66). Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
