INF Toby Gardenhire Lost for Season; C Jeff Christy Reactivated

August 27, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
New Britain Rock Cats News Release

New Britain, CT - The New Britain Rock Cats of the Eastern League made two roster transactions yesterday, with each being effective immediately.

INF Toby Gardenhire, the highly versatile 26-year-old performer who has played virtually every field position during his last two seasons in the Hardware City, has been placed on the Eastern League club's Disabled List with a season-ending broken left wrist. The University of Illinois product - and son of Minnesota Twins manager, Ron Gardenhire - suffered the break in a collision with a Reading Phillies baserunner while playing First Base for the Rock Cats on Monday night. A 41st Round pick in 2005, the 6'0"/190-pound Gardenhire extended his glove hand far to his left to catch a slightly errant throw, with the ball arriving at the same time as the runner. He remained in the game until the next inning.

Toby appeared in 71 games for the 2009 Rock Cats and batted .265 with 19 RBI. His contributions extended well beyond the field, however, as he has always been an exemplary teammate willing to do whatever was necessary to help the team. His solid play and unselfish attitude earned him New Britain's 2008 10th Man Award, as voted by the Rock Cats fans.

C Jeff Christy, a 25-year-old product of the University of Nebraska, has been returned to New Britain's active roster after recovering from a groin injury. A 6th Round pick in the 2006 Draft, Christy has played for the Rock Cats for portions of four different seasons, from 2006 - 2009. In the current campaign, the 6'1"/205-pound receiver appeared in 29 games and batted .190 with 7 RBI. He will be in uniform tonight when the Rock Cats take on the Defenders in Norwich.
