Montreal Alouettes News Release
Montreal, October 16, 2003 â The votes are in and here are the players who will represent the Montreal Alouettes as the league's Most Outstanding Players:
Most Outstanding Player: ANTHONY CALVILLO
Although he has extremely talented receivers, it is no surprise to find the most prolific passer in the CFL this season as the Alouettes' top offensive player. One of the league's only quarterbacks to call his own plays, Calvillo led the Alouettes to a fourth division championship in five seasons. This season, Calvillo also broke team records for most passing attempts (615), most completions (377), most passing yards (5475) and most touchdown passes (36). He also leads the CFL in all those categories, which makes him a favorite for the CFL Most Outstanding Player Award.
Most Outstanding Defensive Player: KEVIN JOHNSON
The Alouettes' defence is one of the best in the CFL and its success is directly related to the performances of linebacker Kevin Johnson. Seventh in the CFL with 67 tackles, Johnson excels against the run and against the pass. With four quarterback sacks and two forced fumbles, he is a playmaker who can make the difference in a game.
Most Outstanding Canadian Player: BEN CAHOON
The 2002 Most Outstanding Canadian Player is the favorite to win it again in 2003. Cahoon has dominated the league more than ever this season, breaking the Alouettes' team record for most receptions in a season. Cahoon now totals 99 receptions for gains of 1422 yards and 13 touchdowns. He is on his way to have the best season ever for a Canadian receiver in the history of the Canadian Football League.
Most Outstanding Lineman: SCOTT FLORY
Born in Saskatchewan, Scott Flory has quickly become one of the pillars on the most dominating offensive line of the league. A CFL and East Division All-Star in 2002, Flory is a young rising star in Canadian Football. He is becoming one of the leaders of the offensive line who allowed Anthony Calvillo to have such a dominating season.
Most Outstanding Rookie: MICHAEL BOTTERILL
Most Outstanding Special Teams Player: MICHAEL BOTTERILL
Very discreet, Michael Botterill has been a force on the Alouettes' special teams this season. With the second-best total special team tackles in the CFL (22), Botterill also excels on kickoff and punt coverage. In his first CFL season, Michael Botterill is one of the best sixth-round draft picks of the history of the Canadian Football League according to Don Matthews, who also said Botterill's strengths are his intelligence on the football field and his athletic ability.
