Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release
FARGO, N.D. â - The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (32-12) defeated the Lincoln Saltdogs (22-21) 11-3 on Friday night to win the series opener at Newman Outdoor Field. RedHawks center fielder Evan Alexander went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored, four runs batted in, and two stolen bases in the win.
The RedHawks opened up the scoring early with a run in the second inning and three runs in the third. Leo Piña continued his stellar June with an RBI single in the third inning. Evan Alexander capitalized with the bases loaded and hit a two-run single to make it a 4-0 lead.
The Saltdogs would respond and make it a one-run game with two runs in the fourth and one run in the fifth. Lincoln's right fielder Hunter Clanin hit a two-run double, in the fourth inning. Lincoln's final run of the night came on a Skyler Weber RBI double in the fifth inning.
Fargo-Moorhead starter Kevin McGovern (6-1) earned the win despite allowing the three runs. The left hander allowed 10 hits and a walk in 5.2 innings pitched but struck out four Saltdogs to limit the damage. McGovern now leads the American Association in wins (6) and has the second most strikeouts (63).
The RedHawks would respond right away with a four-run fifth inning. John Silviano, Rymer Liriano, Evan Alexander, and Peter Maris all hit a double in the fifth to chase Lincoln starter Zach Keenan (2-2) from the game. Keenan allowed eight runs on 10 hits and two walks and did not strike out a batter in the loss.
Fargo-Moorhead scored another run on a wild pitch in the sixth inning and made it 11-3 on a Christian Correa two-run home run in the eighth inning. Lincoln reliever Josh Norwood and outfielder Eddy Martinez allowed the runs in the sixth and eighth inning respectively.
Martinez wasn't the only position player to pitch in the game, as RedHawks infielder Nick Novak pitched a third of an inning in the top of the ninth after Brady Stover had to leave the game after getting hit by a line drive. Stover pitched 1.2 innings before leaving the game.
The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks and Lincoln Saltdogs will continue their three-game series with a 7:02 p.m. game tomorrow night at Newman Outdoor Field. RHP Taylor Bloye returns to Fargo after playing for the RedHawks in 2019 and will face RHP Elijah Johnson (1-2, 5.23 ERA).
