Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release
FARGO, N.D. â - Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks infielder Leo Piña earned the American Association's Rawlings Batter of the Month award for June, the league announced Friday.
This award comes after Piña was named the AAPB Batter of the Week for the weeks of June 13-19 and 20-26. He was the first American Association player to win the award in back-to-back weeks since 2008. Piña is the first Fargo-Moorhead Batter of the Month since Drew Ward earned the award for the month of August 2020.
In June Piña played in 26 games, hit .433 with 11 doubles, six home runs, 29 runs scored, and 20 runs batted in, and led all Fargo-Moorhead batters with a .712 slugging percentage. He registered a hit in 23 of those 26 games and is currently on a 17-game hitting streak. Piña currently leads the American Association with a .405 batting average.
"Over the past few seasons Leo has established himself as one of the most respected players in the league," said Fargo-Moorhead manager Chris Coste. "The amazing month he just had shown why."
The St. Louis Cardinals signed the Venezuelan native as a free agent in 2010. He joined the RedHawks in 2018 after spending seven seasons in the lower leagues with the Cardinals' organization. This is Piña's fifth season with Fargo-Moorhead.
The RedHawks went 19-8 last month and lead the American Association with a 31-12 record. Fargo-Moorhead will open a six-game homestand on Friday night as they host the Lincoln Saltdogs (22-20) for a three-game series at Newman Outdoor Field. The series opener is scheduled for 7:02 p.m.
