Traverse City Pit Spitters News Release

Traverse City, MI - Led by Alec Atkinson's super utility night, the Traverse City Pit Spitters held on to a 4-2 lead and took game one against the Kokomo Jackrabbits on Friday night.

With the largest crowd of the season on hand, Atkinson capped off playing all nine positions by pitching the ninth and picking up the save.

Run support came early for the Pit Spitters. Glenn Miller doubled down the right field line to score a pair and make it 2-0. The offense fell silent as the Jackrabbits got one in the fifth and one in the sixth to tie it.

In the bottom half, Sam Tackett would respond. He doubled home the go-ahead run, and later in the inning he scored on a wild pitch to fire up the home crowd.

With a 4-2 lead, Coby Greiner pitched a scoreless seventh and Joe Horoszko, with Atkinson as his catcher, pitched a scoreless eighth.

The situation set Atkinson up with a save opportunity. In four appearances his senior year, Atkinson put up a 0.70 ERA with a 28.3% strikeout rate. He gave up a leadoff single but buckled down after. He got a fly ball to center for out one. His catcher Colin Summerhill helped the cause by nailing the runner trying to steal second. After a nine-pitch battle, Atkinson finished off the save with a strikeout as 4,075 fans erupted.

Atkinson became the third Pit Spitter to play all nine positions in a game. On July 2, 2019, Kam Smith and Andrew Morrow both completed the feat in a 7-1 win over Battle Creek.
