
Albuquerque Drops Second Straight to Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa - Chris Russin allowed one run in seven innings and Zach Putnam pitched two scoreless innings of relief to secure a 4-1 victory for the Iowa Cubs over the Albuquerque Isotopes on Sunday afternoon at Principal Park.
The Topes lost for the second straight game and are now 6-5 this year. Their only run scored in the third inning. Tony Gwynn Jr. reached on a bunt single, went to third on Dee Gordon's double and scored on a ground out by Elian Herrera.
Russin (1-1) retired nine in a row at one point. He allowed four hits, no walks and struck out four, throwing 82 pitches in seven innings. Putnam struck out three batters to get a six-out save.
Albuquerque starter Sean White (0-1) escaped troubled in the first three innings, stranding five men on base. But he walked five in four-plus innings, including a bases-loaded walk to Ian Stewart that tied the score at 1-1 in the fifth inning and ended White's afternoon.
Red Patterson entered and was greeted by a two-run single by Brad Nelson for a 3-1 lead. Luis Flores capped the scoring with a solo home run off Patterson in the sixth inning.
Scott Van Slyke's 10-game hitting streak ended as he went 0-for-4.
The Isotopes and Cubs wrap up their four-game series Monday morning. Opening Night starter Stephen Fife is on the mound for the Topes. Drew Carpenter will start for Iowa. That game will be heard on 1050 KTBL.
