Iowa Cubs News Release

Des Moines, IA - Third baseman Ian Stewart begins a major league rehab assignment with the Iowa Cubs today. Stewart opened the season on Chicago's disabled list due to a quadriceps strain that he suffered running the bases early in spring training.

The Cubs acquired Stewart, along with minor league pitcher Casey Weathers, from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for former I-Cubs Tyler Colvin and D.J. LeMahieu on December 8, 2011. Stewart has been limited by a wrist injury the last two seasons and batted .201 (36-for-179) with five home runs and 17 RBI in 55 games for Chicago last year.

Stewart played five seasons for the Rockies and had a career-high 25 home runs in 147 games in 2009. The Rockies drafted Stewart in the first round (10th overall) of the 2003 draft out of La Quinta High School in California where he was named a first-team All-American by Baseball America.

The Cubs host the Albuquerque Isotopes today at 1:05 at Principal Park. The gates will open at 11:35. Fans will receive magnet schedules sponsored by Pittsburgh Paint and kids can run the bases after the game sponsored by Safeco Insurance. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 and streamed live at iowacubs.com with the On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 12:45.
