Koehler Solid Again, But Z's Bats Silent in 2-1 Loss

April 14, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release

Tom Koehler allowed just one hit on Sunday afternoon against the Round Rock Express - an Eli Whiteside home run in the sixth inning - but it proved to be enough as Round Rock beat the New Orleans Zephyrs, 2-1.

It was the fourth time over the last two seasons where Koehler gave up just one hit and did not receive a victory. In three of those starts, Koehler has been the losing pitcher. Despite surrendering just two earned runs in 17 innings over his three outings this season, Koehler has yet to break into the win column, as the Z's have provided him with just four runs of support.

The right-hander did move into the Zephyrs' record book, however, when he struck out Mike Olt in the fifth inning to become the New Orleans franchise leader in career strikeouts with 267.

With Koehler out of the game in the seventh, Round Rock pushed across an important insurance run when Chris McGuiness singled in Robinson Chirinos off reliever Jonathan Albaladejo .

The one jolt of offense came from Jordan Brown, who cranked a solo shot off of Yoshinori Tateyama into a stiff wind blowing in from right field to lead off the eighth, slicing the lead in half.

Two batters later, Wilson Valdez laced a single to left, but Kevin Mattison's sharp liner down the first base line was turned into an inning-ending double play.

Cory Burns retired the side in order in the ninth to earn his second save of the year.

Josh Lindblom (1-0) picked up the win for the Express, holding the Zephyrs to two hits over five scoreless innings, and the staff combined to allow only five hits on the day.

The Zephyrs look to clinch a series victory on Monday in the finale of the four-game set. Z's left-hander Brad Hand will face Round Rock right-hander Ross Wolf, with first pitch scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
