Oklahoma City Comets News Release
Oklahoma City - The Oklahoma City RedHawks (5-4) scored six unanswered runs to close out Saturday's game against Memphis Redbirds (4-4), but the visiting Redbirds held on for an 8-7 win before 7,305 at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
The RedHawks lost back-to-back games for the first time this season, as Memphis outhit them, 11-10.
Jake Elmore and Brandon Laird led the RedHawks with two hits apiece in the three-hour, 22-minute game. Laird and Krauss each added two RBI.
Four Redbirds had two hits each. Justin Christian had a game-high four RBI for Memphis thanks to his grand slam in the third inning.
The RedHawks threatened in the bottom of the ninth, but were unable to complete the comeback. With two outs and with runners at first and second, Victor Marte (SV, 1) struck out Laird to end the game.
Oklahoma City took the first lead of the game on a Laird double to center, which scored Trevor Crowe for a 1-0 edge in the first with two outs.
The Redbirds offense quickly answered in the second inning. Jamie Romak scored on a wild pitch by Jose Cisnero with the bases loaded to tie the game, 1-1. A two-out line drive single from Adron Chambers with the bases loaded scored two Redbirds. Kolten Wong's single to left field scored Rob Johnson for a 4-1 lead.
Oklahoma City's defense prevented the Redbirds from expanding their lead early in the third. Catcher Jason Jaramillo tagged out Romak at the plate off a throw from centerfielder Che-Hsuan Lin, but Memphis did not stay off the scoreboard for long.
Christian's grand slam to left field with two outs was his first homer of the year and opened up an 8-1 Memphis lead in the third inning.
Laird answered with a solo shot - his second home run of the season - to left field to cut the Redbirds lead to 8-2 in the fourth.
Trailing 8-4 in the eighth, Crowe scored on a Jimmy Paredes double to cut the deficit to three. A two-run homer from Krauss later in the inning brought Oklahoma City to within one run of Memphis.
Memphis starter Michael Wacha (1-0) earned his first win of the season. He allowed three runs and three hits with three strikeouts over five innings.
Cisnero (0-1) had a rough outing in his first start and took the loss, allowing eight runs over 2.2 innings.
The home series with Memphis continues with a 2:05 p.m. game Sunday at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
