Alaska Continues To Roll, 6-3 Over San Diego

January 8, 2006 - ECHL (ECHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO - The Alaska Aces scored four goals in just over four minutes during the second period Sunday, as they cruised to a 6-3 victory over the injury-plagued San Diego Gulls at the ipayOne Center.

The loss kept the Gulls (15-13-4) in second place in the Pacific Division with 34 points, but they slipped into a tie with Long Beach, which beat Utah on Sunday to pull even with San Diego.

The Aces (25-4-3) continued their hot streak with their fourth straight win and are now unbeaten in 20 of their last 21 games.

The tired Gulls showed the effects of playing their fourth game in five days by allowing four scores in the second period - the most they have allowed in one period all season.

San Diego trailed just 2-1 at the end of one, but by the second intermission, the score read 6-1 with Alaska notching its six goals on only 15 shots. The flurry of Aces goals came over a span of 4:07, turning a tight contest into a blowout and sending starting goaltender Tom Lawson to the bench in favor of Tyler Weiman for the third period.

Alaska jumped ahead 1-0 with an unassisted score from Alex Leavitt just 3:22 into the match. But the Gulls responded with a nice breakaway goal by Richard Keyes at the 7:25 mark to tie it at 1-1. On the play, Grady Moore picked up his 22nd assist of the season and is ranked in the top five in that department among ECHL defenders.

The Gulls did make the match a little more respectable with a pair of goals in the final period - Steve Hildenbrand's 14th and a short-handed score from Jonathon Shockey, the defenseman's second goal in two nights and second of the year. Alaska, meanwhile, had a trio of skaters tally at least three points. San Diego, which played without six injured players, will play six of their next eight games at the ipayOne Center.

Notes: The injured list climbed Sunday when Alex Kim was placed on the seven-day IR. He broke his collar bone Saturday night against Utah... Kim joins five others on the injured list: Alex Rogosheske (torn ACL), David Svagrovsky (tear in finger), Guillaume Fournier (concussion), Doug MacIver (sprained knee) and Andy Thompson (wrist surgery)... Jesse Bennefield has 23 points (12g, 11a) in the last 14 games... San Diego has killed 45 of 52 penalties in the last six games but gave up three power-play goals Sunday... Weiman, who didn't figure in the decision, has stopped 225 of the last 237 shots (94.9 percent)...

The Gulls return to action Tuesday in Las Vegas, with game-time from the Orleans Arena set for 7:05 p.m. San Diego is back home Friday against the Bakersfield Condors. It will be the opening of "Old Time Hockey Weekend" and another "Free Food Friday," with the first 3,500 fans receiving a free hot dog. Saturday, the Aces will be back in town and the first 6,000 fans will get a special Willie O'Ree hat.
