July 16, 2003 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, in conjunction with the American Hockey League, announced on Tuesday the schedule format for the 2003-2004 season. The Penguins, along with each of the AHL's 27 other teams, will play an unbalanced 80-game schedule, including 40 home dates and 40 road dates.
During last week's annual meeting of the Board of Governors, the board approved the 1,120-game schedule format for the regular season, based on the new four-division alignment that was announced last Thursday.
The Penguins, who were aligned into the Eastern Conference's East Division along with Albany, Binghamton, Bridgeport, Hershey, Norfolk and Philadelphia, will play 68 of their 80 regular season games against Eastern Conference opponents, including 52 against their division rivals.
During the upcoming season, the Penguins will play the River Rats six times (three home/three road); the Senators and Sound Tigers eight times (four home/four road); and their former South Division rivals, the Bears, Admirals and Phantoms ten times (five home/five road).
The Penguins will play 16 games against Atlantic Division teams, including two (one home/one road) against the Manchester Monarchs, who will be on the Pens' schedule for the first time. Along with the Monarchs, the Penguins will play two games against Hartford, Lowell, Providence, Springfield and Worcester and four games (two home/two road) against Portland.
Of the 15 teams the Penguins will play next season, only two will be from the Western Conference. The Penguins will play the Syracuse Crunch eight times (four home/four road) and the expansion Toronto Roadrunners four times (two home/two road).
The Penguins will not play Cleveland, Hamilton, Manitoba, Rochester, St. John's, Chicago, Cincinnati, Grand Rapids, Houston, Milwaukee, San Antonio and Utah during the regular season.
The 2003-04 AHL regular season will begin on Wed., Oct. 8, and conclude on Sun., Apr. 11. The schedule will be released in early August.
The Penguins will begin their fifth season in the American Hockey League in October. For information about season tickets, contact the ticket office at 208-PENS.
