Charlotte Checkers News Release

(Charlotte, NC - Wednesday, July 16, 2003) The Charlotte Checkers are pleased to announce the promotion of Shannon Smith to Director of Ticket Sales, and Adam Pirttima to Director of Game Day Operations. The moves are announced today by Checkers President Bob Scheer. Smith and Pirttima will assume their new positions immediately. "We have always looked at the Checkers and the ECHL as being a development league for talent, both on-ice and off-ice," stated Scheer. "Promoting Shannon to Director of Ticket Sales, and Adam to Director of Game Operations follows this philosophy. "They are both going to have terrific careers, and we are really excited that they want to pursue these challenges."

Smith joined the Checkers from the ECHL's Richmond Renegades organization late in the 2001-02 season as an account executive. She received her undergraduate degree from Mercer University in Macon, Georgia in 1999, and then went on to earn a Masters Degree in Science & Sports Management from the University of Denver in 2000. Smith served the Checkers as Director of Game Day Operations last season. She replaces Mary Beth Chambers who left the Checkers to take a position as Director of Marketing for the US Olympic Kayaking Team. "I'm very excited about this new opportunity," commented Smith. "I have always wanted to work in sports and I'm willing to put in the time and hard work to achieve our goals. "We have a great product and I'm looking forward to the challenge of increasing our ticket sales this coming season."

Pirttima joined the Checkers organization last July. The Ocala, Florida native and 2001 graduate of Clemson University served the Checkers last season as an account executive, and will continue to be involved in ticket sales in addition to his new duties as Director of Game Day Operations. "I'm very grateful to the Checkers organization for this opportunity," remarked Pirttima. "The Checkers are a great organization to work for, and I look forward to building on the excellent job Shannon did with game day operations last season."

The Checkers will begin their 11th season in the ECHL with the regular season and home opener Saturday, October 18 at 7:30 p.m. hosting the Gwinnett (GA) Gladiators at Cricket Arena.

The Checkers will also stage one preseason game at Cricket Arena on Monday, October 13 when they'll host the Columbia Inferno at 7:00 p.m. All tickets for the preseason game will be reserved and priced at $5.00. Individual tickets for all regular season and preseason games will go on sale on Monday, September 22.

Season tickets for the 2003-04 season are now on sale. Season ticket prices start as low as $245.00. Mini-plans and group discounts are also available. Call the Checkers office at (704) 342-4423 for further information.
