Mowers' Signing Completes Trifecta

July 16, 2003 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Grand Rapids Griffins News Release

Grand Rapids, Mich. - Right wing Mark Mowers, who was named an American Hockey League Second Team All-Star as a member of the 2002-03 Grand Rapids Griffins, has re-signed with the Detroit Red Wings, the NHL club announced on Wednesday.

The signing of Mowers, 29, to a one-year deal means that the Griffins' three postseason AHL All-Stars are once again under contract to the Red Wings for the 2003-04 season. Michel Picard, a Second Team choice at left wing, has one season remaining on his original contract, while First Team All-Star Marc Lamothe, winner of the Aldege "Baz" Bastien Award as the AHL's outstanding goaltender, re-signed with Detroit last month.

Mowers enjoyed one of the most prolific offensive campaigns in Griffins history last year, in the process establishing career-highs in goals, assists and points. He finished second on the team and fourth in the AHL scoring race with 81 points, while his team-high 34 goals tied for sixth on the circuit and second all-time among Griffins single-season efforts.

The former Hobey Baker finalist proved to be a clutch performer, tallying the second-most game-winning goals (nine) ever in one season for Grand Rapids. No stranger to his own end of the ice, Mowers also led all AHL forwards and ranked sixth overall in the league with a plus-26 rating.
