Carolina Mudcats News Release
ZEBULON, NC - Jesus Aguilar and Tony Wolters served as catalysts for a big offensive night from the Carolina Mudcats. The Indians' Advanced-A affiliate clubbed the Wilmington Blue Rocks 7-3 in front of 5,292 on Thursday night at Five County Stadium.
Carolina (33-38) starts the second half 1-0, while Wilmington drops to 29-42 on the year.
Jesus Aguilar, recently named to the World roster for the All-Star Futures Game in Kansas City, Kan., launched his seventh home run, and drove in three as part of a three-hit performance. Tony Wolters reached base four times, and cracked a pair of doubles.
Jordan Cooper (2-3) earned the win by tossing four scoreless frames. He scattered five hits and struck out five. Brooks Pounders (0-2) suffered the loss after allowing four runs on nine hits over five innings.
Giovanny Urshela set the tone early with a double to left-center that scored Tony Wolters for a 1-0 lead. Jesus Aguilar followed with his first hit of the night, a single, to bring home Urshela.
Leading 2-0 in the fifth, Wilmington put runners at the corners against Cooper with one out. But Carolina turned the tide on one the more incredible defensive plays of the season. Roman Hernandez was caught between first and second, and eventually tagged out on a 1-3-4 play. In the mean time, Orlando Calixte tried to seize the opportunity by breaking for home. After tagging out Hernandez, Ronny Rodriguez through a strike to home plate, allowing Tyler Cannon to tag out Calixte to end the inning.
The Mudcats scored a pair of runs on a wild pitch and a Bo Greenwell single in the sixth for a 4-0 lead. Aguilar stroked a two-run shot onto the scoreboard in left field for a 6-0 lead in the seventh.
The teams swapped runs in the eighth, and the Blue Rocks got a two-run homer from Kevin David in the ninth to round out the scoring.
Carolina looks for the series win against Wilmington on Friday, June 22. First pitch is set for 7:15 p.m. at Five County Stadium. Tickets are available through the box office by calling (919) 269-2287 or visiting carolinamudcats.com.
