HOUSTON, Texas – The American Hockey League's Houston Aeros have recalled goaltender Robert Gherson from the Quad Cities Mallards of the United Hockey League, the teams announced Wednesday. With Mike Smith suffering from the flu, Gherson is expected to back up Josh Harding in Grand Rapids tonight.

Gherson, 21, is 9-7-4 with a 2.48 goals against average and a .919 save percentage in 22 games with the Mallards. The 6-foot-1, 175-pound Toronto native was 0-1-0 with an 8.53 goals against average and a .800 save percentage in one pre-season game with the Aeros. Gherson spent two weeks backing up Smith in December while Harding was out with a concussion.

The Aeros signed Gherson as a free agent on September 24. He went 12-21-5 with a 3.17 goals against average in 44 games with OHL Sarnia and Owen Sound in 2003-04. In four junior seasons, Gherson was 69-83-21 with a 3.29 goals against average and a .894 save percentage. Gherson was Washington's fifth-round pick, No. 145 overall, in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.
