Harrisburg Senators News Release

A seven-run fourth inning powered the Akron Aeros to a high-scoring victory over the Harrisburg Senators on Saturday evening at Metro Bank Park, as the Aeros prevailed 9-7.

The Senators (28-28) staked out an early 4-0 lead with four runs in the first inning, and still led by that margin heading into the fourth. Starting pitcher Aaron Thompson (2-8) had allowed just one hit through three innings of work, but unraveled in the fourth, giving up six hits and hitting two batters. Akron (26-30) sent eleven batters to the plate in the inning, scored seven runs, and led for the remainder of the game.

The Senators began their half of the first inning with five consecutive hits, and seven of their first eight hitters reached base safely. Michael Martinez led off with a solo home run, and Jesus Valdez scored the second run, on a single by Chris Marrero. Marrero did not pick up an RBI, as an error by Aero center fielder Tim Fedroff allowed Valdez to score. Edgardo Baez doubled home Marrero, then scored on an RBI single from Jhonatan Solano.

Akron extended its lead to 8-4 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning with a single run in the top of the sixth, but the Senators got the run right back in the bottom of the frame. Martinez led off with a triple, and then scored on a Valdez RBI groundout.

That made it 8-5 heading into the seventh, an inning in which the Senators would inch closer, thanks to another big hit from Martinez. He hit his second home run of the game, this time from the left side of the plate-his first was from the right side-to cut the deficit to 8-7. But the Aeros plated an insurance run in the top of the ninth, and Bryce Stowell shut down the Senators in the bottom of the inning to earn his second save. Reliever Bryan Price earned the win for Akron, to improve to 1-2 on the year.

The Sens finished with 16 hits on the game, getting big days from Martinez (two home runs, a triple, 3 RBI and 3 runs scored), Solano (4/5, RBI), Baez (3/5, RBI, run scored), and Valdez (two doubles, RBI, run scored). Marrero, Danny Espinosa, Marvin Lowrance, and Tim Pahuta each collected one hit in the defeat.

The two teams play game three of the three-game series Sunday afternoon at 2 PM, with LHP Tom Milone (5-1, 3.41) squaring off against LHP Nick Hagadone (0-0, 6.75). Fans can hear every pitch of the game by tuning into 1460 AM The Ticket, or www.senatorsbaseball.com, beginning at 1:45 PM.
