New Britain Rock Cats News Release

NEW BRITAIN, CT - Kyle Gibson took the mound for the Rock Cats on Saturday night with the hopes of snapping another seven-game losing streak, but not even the top pitching prospect helped as Binghamton - led by Kirk Nieuwenhuis' six RBI performance - crushed the ‘Cats, 13-1 before a sellout crowd of 7,588. It was the tenth capacity-filled crowd of the season at New Britain Stadium.

Gibson, who entered the game with a perfect 3-0 record and 1.37 ERA, cruised through the first two innings. He retired the seventh-straight batter he faced in the game to open the top of the third before Mike Nickeas broke up the streak with a double to left field and Jose Coronado followed with a base hit to center. An uncharacteristic throwing error by center fielder Ben Revere allowed Coronado to move to second to put both runners in scoring position. Nieuwenhuis then lined a double into right field to knock in both runners and put the B-Mets on top, 2-0.

Nieuwenhuis finished the night with three hits, including two doubles, and six RBI. He also scored a run. His biggest hit came in the midst of a seven-run seventh on a bases loaded three-run double. Coronado added three hits, two runs, and three RBI.

Gibson (3-1) allowed four more runs to finish with six runs on seven hits through 5 2/3 innings. It was the second consecutive game he was unable to make it through six innings of work and also walked an uncharacteristic three batters. He struck out four.

The B-Mets then feasted on Rock Cats relief man Michael Allen, who surrendered seven runs on seven hits in the seventh inning.

Eric Niesen (1-2) hurled six shutout innings for Binghamton, scattering three hits and striking out five to pick up his first win of the season.

The Rock Cats' lone run came in the bottom of the seventh on Brandon Roberts' RBI single that knocked in Danny Lehmann.
