Aerodynamics...

Better Late Than Never...It wasn't the way the Aeros would have drawn it up, but last night's extra-innings affair still went into the left-hand column as Akron clipped Bowie 8-6 in 10 innings. The Aeros got another strong start from LHP Chuck Lofgren and held a five-run lead after seven innings, but the Baysox rallied for four runs in the eighth before tying it in the bottom of the ninth off closer Vinnie Pestano. Akron showed why it holds the best record in the Eastern League in the 10th however, as LF Nick Weglarz drilled a solo home run on the third pitch of the inning over the wall in left-center and 3B Jerad Head, who put on an impressive power display in batting practice prior to the game, followed three batters later with a solo bomb the opposite way to right to give the Aeros some insurance. RHP Josh Judy then closed things out with his first save at the Double-A level (and just the third save of his career overall), allowing a double with two away but striking out Bowie's Paco Figueroa on a nasty slider to end it.

Oh, Canada...Weglarz's game-winning home run in the 10th put a cap on his best performance of the season, as the native of Stevensville, Ontario finished 3-5 with a pair of doubles, the homer, two runs scored and two RBI. It was his first three-hit game of the year, and continued to provide signals that he's starting to break out of the slump he's been in mired in to start the season. Weglarz opened 2009 just 3-48 (an .063 average) through his first 17 games, but starting with Wednesday's victory over Harrisburg has gone 5-13 (a .385 mark) with two doubles, a homer, three runs scored and three RBI in the last three games, with hits in all three contests as well. Additionally, he has just one strikeout in his last 15 at-bats after punching out 18 times in his first 48 at-bats to open the year.

Swedish Fish...It was another tough-luck no-decision for Chuck Lofgren last night, as the man they call the "Big Swede" was two outs away from notching his second win of the season before the Baysox scored the tying run. Lofgren allowed just one run and four hits in five innings, although he often found himself in trouble thanks to four walks. The left-hander made big pitches when he needed to however, stranding a runner at third base in the second, working out a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the fourth unharmed, and then leaving runners on the corners to end the fifth. In his last three starts Lofgren has allowed just two runs and only six hits over the course of 17.0 innings (a 1.06 ERA), although he has just one win over that span as the bullpen has been unable to hold a lead for him in both of his last two starts. Lofgren is seventh in the Eastern League with a 1.29 ERA, and opponents are hitting only .137 against him this season.

Did You Know...C Damaso Espino extended his hitting streak to five games last night, which is an Aeros season-high.
