Missed Connections...The Aeros dropped their second straight series yesterday, falling 3-2 to Bowie as the Baysox claimed three out of the five games in the set. The clubs traded two-run rallies in the bottom of the second and top of the third respectively, and the game remained tied until the bottom of the eighth when Mike Costanzo delivered the go-ahead RBI single to center, spoiling the lefty-lefty matchup with Akron reliever Matt Meyer. The Aeros had a runner thrown out at the plate while striking for the two tying runs in the top of the third, and then couldn't capitalize on a leadoff double in the fourth, a leadoff single in the fifth, or an opening base hit in the eighth. In fact, Akron left the bases loaded in the third before stranding a runner at third base in both the fourth and fifth innings while the game was still tied. The Aeros have now dropped five of their last seven contests, their worst stretch since losing seven of eight between May 28th and June 4th.
Triple Trouble...Akron did have something to celebrate last night even with the defeat, as the Aeros turned a triple play in the bottom of the fourth inning. It was the first triple play in franchise history, dating to 1989 when the club moved to Canton. Bowie was threatening to take the lead when the play occurred, as Ambiorix Concepcion opened the inning with a double and Aeros starter Josh Tomlin plunked Guillermo Rodriguez to put runners at first and second with no one out. Daniel Figueroa then popped up a sacrifice bunt attempt as Tomlin made the catch for the first out, fired to shortstop Carlos Rivero to double off Concepcion for the second out, and Rivero's throw to first baseman Matt McBride was in time to double off Rodriguez. It was the first triple play in the Eastern League since 2007, when Binghamton's Mark Kiger, Wilson Batista and Brett Harper went around the horn to turn a 5-4-3 triple play.
Feast or Famine...While a number of regulars in the lineup had excellent success against Bowie pitching in the five games, there were others who just couldn't get untracked against the Baysox. The quartet of Jose Constanza, John Drennen, Jared Goedert and Carlos Santana had no trouble at the plate, as all hit better than .300 in the series and combined to bat .385 (20-52) with eight walks, five extra-base hits, eight runs scored and seven RBI. On the flip side, the foursome of Jerad Head, Matt McBride, Beau Mills and Nick Weglarz batted a combined .088 (5-57) with one extra-base hit, two runs scored, and just one RBI.
Roster Move...The Aeros made a roster move today, as RHP Jeanmar Gomez has rejoined the team from the Class A Mahoning Valley roster, taking the place of RHP Fausto Carmona. Carmona made one start for the Aeros and turned in a complete game victory Tuesday night in the series opener, while Gomez will resume his normal spot in the rotation this evening.
