Defenders Lose 7-5

READING, PA - The R-Phils supplied the fireworks for 8,040 fans as they defeated the Defenders after exploding for four runs in the second inning en route to a 7-5 win on the Fourth of July.

Daryl Maday saw all nine hitters stroll to the plate for Reading in the second frame, as the R-Phils scored four times. 1B-Brian Stavisky started the inning off with a single, and then 2B-Neil Sellers doubled putting runners in scoring position. LF-Jeremy Slayden drove in the first run with a RBI single, SS-Ozzie Chavez followed with an RBI single as well. The pitcher Joe Savery got on the stat sheet driving in a run on a fielder's choice. CF-Quitin Berry brought in the fourth run with a single and Connecticut trailed 4-0.

The Defenders would hit the score sheet in the top of the fourth with 1B-Brett Pill's ninth homerun of the season, but Maday couldn't keep Connecticut within three as Reading answered with a run of their own in the bottom half.

2B-Brock Bond doubled in the fifth to extend his on-base streak to 48 straight games, and CF-Mike McBryde celebrated with him driving in Bond with an RBI double. But Connecticut traded runs with Reading again and at the end of five it was 7-2.

Connecticut finally cut the lead in half in the eighth inning, a single by McBryde followed by Brett Pill's 26th double to drive in another run. Pill came into score, but it was a costly double play off the bat of 3B-Ramon Castro that ended the Defenders rally.

RHP-Daryl Maday (3-3) suffered the loss giving up six runs in five innings, while tying his season high in strikeouts with five. LHP- Joe Savery (11-1) gets the win as his eleven wins is tops in the EL. Savery pitched seven innings allowing five runs off of ten hits. RHP-Tyson Brummett came in and worked a 1, 2, 3 ninth for his first save of the year.

Tomorrow afternoon Connecticut (46-34) and Reading (47-33) will resume action at 1:05 pm at First Energy Stadium in Reading, PA. On the mound for the Defenders will be RHP-Tim Alderson 4-1. For the R-Phils it will be RHP-Yolan Flande ( 0-0 as they will try and hand Connecticut their first series loss on the road.
