Fisher Cats make it five straight with 2-1 win over Portland

Manchester, NH---The New Hampshire Fisher Cats extended their winning streak to a season-high five games with a 2-1 win over the Portland Sea Dogs before 8,072 fans on the Fourth of July at Merchantsauto.com Stadium.

The crowd, the sixth largest to attend a game at Merchantsauto.com Stadium, saw New Hampshire play in special red, white and blue uniforms as the Primaries. The team was initially nicknamed Primaries before the inaugural 2004 season, but changed shortly thereafter to Fisher Cats.

New Hampshire (37-44) scored its runs in the bottom of the first inning. Adam Calderone singled and scored on a double by Brian Dopirak (1-4, RBI, R) to make it 1-0. For Dopirak, it was his Eastern League-leading 65th RBI and extended his hit streak to a franchise-record 18 consecutive games. Dopirak scored on a single by David Cooper (2-for-3, RBI) to make it 2-0.

Portland (38-42) scored its only run in the top of the third on a Josh Reddick (2-for-4) single and a double by Argenis Diaz to make it 2-1.

Kenny Rodriguez (1-0), making his first start of the 2009 season for New Hampshire, earned the win, allowing one run on three hits in six innings. Rommie Lewis worked 1.2 innings of scoreless relief and Danny Farquhar notched the final four outs, working around a walk and a hit-by-pitch in the top of the ninth inning, for his fourth save.

Portland starter Jared Plummer (6-4) suffered the loss, allowing two runs in six innings. He settled down after allowing the two first inning runs and ended hit outing by retiring ten straight batters.

There's a doubleheader at Merchantsauto.com Stadium tomorrow (Sunday). The USA Baseball National Team takes on the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) All-Stars in a 2:45pm game, followed by the Fisher Cats/Sea Dogs game at 6:35pm in a single-admission doubleheader that will be capped by an Atlas Fireworks Show.
