Akron RubberDucks News Release
Akron, OH -Portland's Marquez Smith homered and singled, and four Portland pitchers combined on a four-hitter, as the Sea Dogs defeated the Akron Aeros, 3-1, Tuesday night at Canal Park.
The combo of Mike MacDonald, Jason Urquidez, Brock Huntzinger, and Michael Olmsted worked the Aeros over in the series opener, giving up just four hits and a single run. MacDonald went four innings as the starter, allowing the only Aeros run in the second inning. He gave up three hits and a run.
Urquidez (2-2) followed and tossed three scoreless innings, while only surrendering one hit, to earn the win. In two appearances against the Aeros this year, Urquidez has thrown eight shutout innings. Huntzinger worked a scoreless eighth, and Olmsted tossed a perfect ninth for his first Double-A save. The Aeros (67-47) only picked up one hit over the last five innings.
The Sea Dogs (54-62) entered the game with a 4.20 staff ERA, which ranked 10th out of the league's 12 teams. In four games against the Aeros, however, they have crafted two shutout wins, along with Tuesday's 3-1 gem.
Aeros starter Giovanni Soto (6-9) struggled with his control early, giving up a pair of runs in the first inning. Smith had the first of his two hits, an RBI single to right to score Jackie Bradley. Soto later issued a bases-loaded walk to Peter Hissey.
Smith led off the Portland third with a solo homer, his fourth of the year, to make it 3-1. Soto walked a season-high five batters before being lifted after four innings.
The Aeros bullpen provided a bright spot, as Trey Haley, Kyle Landis, and Preston Guilmet combined for five innings of shutout relief. Haley made his Double-A debut with a pair of scoreless innings.
The Aeros' four hits were delivered by two players. Juan Diaz stroked a pair of doubles, and Tyler Holt collected a pair of singles. Ryan Rohlinger had an RBI groundout in the second inning, scoring Diaz from third. Thomas Neal, who entered the game as the league's leading hitter, went 0-4.
The Aeros and Sea Dogs will play the middle game of the series on Wednesday night at 7:05. LHP Drake Britton (3-4, 4.24) will start for the Sea Dogs, while RHP Paolo Espino (6-2, 3.13) will get the starting nod for Akron. All Aeros games are broadcast on Fox Sports 1350 AM and online at www.sportsradio1350.com. For more information, please call the Aeros at 330-253-5151.
