(Trenton, NJ) - Abraham Almonte doubled twice in his return from the disabled list and Dellin Betances earned his third win as the Trenton Thunder nipped the Reading Phillies, 4-3, Tuesday night at Waterfront Park in front of 7,447 fans for the team's tenth win in its last 11 games. Ryan Pope struck out two in the ninth to preserve the win as Trenton (70-45) moved 25 games above .500 for the first time since September 2010.

With the Thunder trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth, Almonte led off with a two-base hit to spark a go-ahead two-run rally. Two batters later David Adams tied the game with an RBI single, and he was followed by Zoilo Almonte who also delivered a run scoring hit. Abe Almonte's RBI double in the sixth provided a big insurance run that made the score 4-2.

After Kelvin Perez tossed two scoreless innings behind Betances (3-1), Mark Montgomery allowed a run on three hits in the eighth inning but kept the lead by striking out a pair. Pope allowed the leadoff runner in the ninth to reach base on an error but retired the next three batters to end the victory.

Betances was charged with two runs on six hits in his five innings of work. He allowed RBI hits to Tug Hulett (fourth-inning double) and Cody Asche (fifth-inning single). Reading starter Trevor May (8-10) gave up seven hits and three runs (two earned) in his five innings.

The Thunder and Phillies continue the three-game series with a Wednesday afternoon matinee. First pitch is scheduled for 12:05 pm, with Trenton left-hander Vidal Nuno (7-2, 2.16) expected to start against Reading righty Ethan Martin (9-6, 3.48).
