Houston, TX - The Texas Stars (10-7-0-0, 20 points) were defeated by the Houston Aeros (10-7-1-2, 23 points) 4-2 in front of 8,587 fans on Sunday night at the Toyota Center. Center Jarod Palmer scored off a rebound with 1:39 left in regulation, breaking a 2-2 tie and giving the Aeros their third straight win over the Stars this season. Texas right wing Greg Rallo scored a goal and added an assist as the Stars saw their four-game winning streak come to an end. Texas goalie Tyler Beskorowany (0-1-0) made his AHL debut, stopping 27 of 30 Houston shots in the loss. Houston goalie Anton Khudobin (6-5-1) stopped 31 of 33 Texas shots in the win. The Stars begin a seven-game home stand this Wednesday in a rematch with the Aeros at 7:30 pm at Cedar Park Center.
Houston opened the scoring in the first period, but the Stars countered quickly to even things up. The Aeros jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 6:47, left wing Matt Kassian put in a rebound off a Brendan Buck wrap around attempt. Kassian's first goal of the year was countered 1:05 later by Texas. Stars defenseman Severin Blindenbacher blasted a shot from the top of the right-wing circle, beating goalie Anton Khudobin and tying the game 1-1 at 7:52. Right wing Greg Rallo and center Travis Morin set up Blindenbacher's first goal of the year.
The teams traded goals again in the second period. Texas took its only lead of the night off a power-play goal by Greg Rallo. The Stars right wing snapped a wrist shot from the left-wing circle, notching his fifth goal of the year at 7:43. Defensemen Brad Lukowich and Maxime Fortunus each earned assists on the goal. The Aeros countered with a power-play goal at the buzzer by former Star Warren Peters. As time was expiring, he poked in a rebound for his third goal of the year and second against his old team at 19:59.
In the third period, Texas held the Aeros without a shot for the first 16:36 of the period. Despite the valiant effort, Houston pushed in front at 18:21. Center Jarod Palmer found a rebound outside of the Stars crease and sent a wrist shot into the Texas net for his fourth goal of the year and a 3-2 Aeros lead. Captain Jon DiSalvatore added an empty-net goal with 30 seconds left for the 4-2 final.
Prior to the game, Texas announced a roster move. The team recalled right wing Sean Backman from the Idaho Steelheads and reassigned rookie forward Tristan King to Idaho. Backman spent five games in Idaho, scoring two goals and totaling four points. Prior to his assignment to Idaho, Backman played in eight games for Texas, picking up a goal and an assist for two points. King, a 20-year old rookie, scored twice and set up two others for four points in nine games with Texas.
