Akron RubberDucks News Release
Aeros Annihilation...It was another eventful night in Canal Park yesterday evening, as Akron dominated Erie 9-0 in front of 2,579 fans on Dollar Dog Monday. The Aeros slugged a season-high four home runs, LHP Ryan Edell kept the SeaWolves scoreless through seven, and C Carlos Santana tied a franchise home run record in the second-largest victory of the season. Akron scored in five consecutive innings beginning with a two-spot in the bottom of the third, and 1B Beau Mills drilled a pair of solo home runs for his second multi-homer game of the season (both coming against Erie). Every Akron starter had at least one hit, six different players drove in runs, and eight different players scored a run.
Santana Slugs...Santana's seventh-inning shot to the bleachers in right field marked his fourth straight game with a home run, tying the franchise record set by Kevin Kouzmanoff July 16th-19th of 2006. The catcher entered the day as the second Aero this year with homers in three straight days (Nick Weglarz June 23rd-25th against Trenton), and the switch-hitter is now batting an even .500 (7-14) with four homers and six RBI over his five-game hitting streak. Cleveland's number-one prospect entering the season according to Baseball America, the native of Santo Domingo, DR is batting .272 on the season while ranking second in the EL with 19 home runs and 69 RBI, and leads the league with 63 walks. His numbers put him on pace to write himself in to numerous sections of the Aeros record book, as the 23-year-old is on pace to set a new franchise record with 87 walks, rank second with 95 RBI, tie for fourth with 25 home runs and rank fifth with a .396 on-base percentage.
Edell Earns a Win...A master of the no-decision this year, Edell earned just his third win in 15 starts with his seventh quality start. The left-hander kept the potent SeaWolves offense off-balance all night, allowing just four hits and two walks while striking out seven in seven scoreless innings. Edell now ranks in the top-five in the league in both ERA (2.48) and strikeouts (87), and accomplished a rare feat by striking out the side in both the first and sixth innings while victimizing Erie's Deik Scram, Danny Worth and Brennan Boesch in both instances.
First Things First...Not to be overshadowed by the accomplishments of battery mates Santana and Edell, first baseman Mills also had a huge game with his two dingers. It was his second two-homer game of the season (he also did it May 29th at Erie) and also marked his team-leading 30th multi-hit game of the year, as the product of Lewis & Clark State is batting .306 with four homers and 14 RBI in his past 22 games dating to July 4th.
Did You Know...The 9-0 final was the second most lopsided victory for the Aeros this season, behind only a 12-run margin in a 12-0 victory over New Hampshire June 10th. It was also Akron's 12th shutout of the year, trailing only Bowie's 14 in the league.
