(Reading, PA) - RHP Blake Maxwell (3-6) worked five strong innings on three hits and one run as the Portland Sea Dogs (50-52) blasted the Reading Phillies (56-46) 12-1 on Tuesday night at First Energy Stadium. The Sea Dogs even up the series at one game apiece and move into a tie with the Trenton Thunder for the second playoff spot in the Northern Division.
Maxwell, who earned his third road win of the season, allowed just a first inning run. Portland's bullpen trio of LHP Dustin Richardson (2 IP), LHP Andrew Dobies (IP) and RHP Chad Rhoades closed out the victory with 4 scoreless innings on four hits and six strikeouts.
LF Ryan Kalish and 1B Jon Still each went 3-for-6 with 3 RBI with C Juan Apodaca and 2B Ryan Khoury picking up two hits apiece. The Sea Dogs scored 9 runs off the Reading bullpen; including seven in the final two innings off RHP Angel Castro (only one was earned).
Both teams exchanged runs in the first inning, ignited by their leadoff batters. CF Josh Reddick (3-for-3, RBI, 2B) started the game with a double, advanced to third base on a ground out and scored on 3B Jorge Jimenez's (1-for-3, RBI) sac-fly. CF Quintin Berry (1-for-4) led off the Reading first with a single and scored on a 2-out single by 3B Neil Sellers (3-for-4, RBI).
Reddick would play a factor in Portland's next two runs off LHP Joe Savery, giving Portland a 3-1 lead after four innings. In the third, Reddick led off the frame with a bunt-single, Kalish and Jimenez singled to load the bases. 1B Lars Anderson (0-for-4, RBI, 2 BB) snapped a 1-1 tie with an RBI ground out to first base. Reddick delivered a two-out single in the fourth inning to score Apodaca (2-for-3, 2 BB, 3 RS), who walked to start the inning.
Savery (12-4) took the loss for the Phillies, allowing six hits, three runs, three walks and fanned three over 5 IP. The Sea Dogs scored two runs off reliever RHP Tristan Crawford in the sixth inning. Apodaca doubled to start the frame and scored on Khoury's double to right-center field. RF Matt Sheely (0-for-3, 2 BB, 2 RS) advanced Khoury to third base and pinch-hitter Reid Engel (0-for-2, RBI, RS) delivered a sacrifice fly to center field.
Portland knocked around RHP Angel Castro in the eighth inning, scoring three times and sending eight men to the plate. Kalish and Still drove the final 7 runs for the Sea Dogs in the final two innings. In the eighth they drove in the 3 tallies with singles and produced 2-run doubles in the ninth.
Portland continues their 4-game set with the Reading Phillies on Wednesday night at First Energy Stadium beginning at 7:05 PM.
