Norfolk Admirals News Release
HERSHEY, Penn. - The Admirals saw a three-goal third period lead vanish as Hershey tied the game in the last minute of regulation. However, Norfolk (20-24-2-1) scored three times in the shootout to earn a 4-3 victory over the Bears (23-19-3-3) on Sunday evening at Giant Center.
Peter Holland scored his fourth goal in five games since returning from Anaheim. Patrick Maroon had a goal and an assist, and Dan Sexton also scored for the Admirals. Norfolk netminder Igor Bobkov (9-13-0) stopped 31 of 34 shots through regulation and overtime before denying three of four Hershey shootout attempts.
The Admirals continue a four-game road trip on Friday against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. They return to Norfolk Scope Arena on Feb. 22nd and 23rd against the Providence Bruins.
Maroon's 13th goal of the season opened scoring for the visitors. With just under five minutes remaining in the opening period, Maroon tipped a Sami Vatanen shot under the pads of Dany Sabourin to give the Admirals a 1-0 lead at 14:14.
The Admirals doubled their lead on Holland's team-leading 16th goal of the campaign. With 8:32 to go in the middle stanza, Holland picked up a pass from Luca Caputi and fired a slap shot over the glove of the Bears' netminder to put Norfolk ahead, 2-0.
With less than three minutes to play in the period, Dan Sexton gave the Admirals a 3-0 advantage. After winning a battle for the puck behind the Bears' net, Maroon slipped a pass out front to Sexton. Before Sabourin could recover, Sexton knocked in his third goal of the season at 17:22.
Hershey's comeback began in the opening two minutes of the final frame. From just inside the offensive zone, Barry Almeida ripped a shot off the post and behind Bobkov to narrow the Norfolk lead to 3-1 at 1:42.
The Bear's comeback attempt continued with a pair of goals by Ryan Potulny. After a feed from Casey Wellman, Potulny tipped a shot past Bobkov to shrink the visitors' lead to 3-2 at 10:35.
Potulny's second goal of the night tied the game at 3-3 with just 35 seconds remaining in regulation. Potulny sent a shot off the crossbar behind Bobkov and across the goal line to knot the game at 3-3.
With neither team scoring in overtime, the teams headed to a shootout. With his team up 2-1 after four rounds, Luca Caputi went top shelf of Sabourin to give the Admirals the their fifth shootout victory of the season. Maroon and Josh Brittain also scored in the shootout for Norfolk, while Peter LeBlanc was the only Hershey shooter to solve Bobkov in the shootout.
Dany Sabourin (7-7-2) stopped 18 of 21 shots through regulation and overtime before allowing three goals on five shots in the shootout for the shootout loss.
Norfolk was 0-for-2 on the power play. Hershey was 0-for-4.
