
Admirals strike down Devils

LOWELL, MA - Mathieu Darche had a goal and an assist and Kyle Wanvig scored with 2:55 left in the third period to lead the Norfolk Admirals (5-10-0-2) past Lowell Devils (6-7-1-0) 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Tsongas Arena.
The Admirals dominated the opening period with a 15-3 shots advantage and 1-0 lead on the scoreboard. Darche netted his third goal of the season and ninth point in four games since joining Norfolk at 16:43. Darche sent a shot from the slot past Lowell netminder Frank Doyle stick-side.
The Devils struck back on just their fourth shot of the game early in the second period. Petr Vrana spotted Barry Tallackson with a backdoor feed and an easy power play goal at 2:43 of the second stanza. The teams headed into the third period deadlocked at 1-1.
The teams remained tied 1-1 until 2:55 remaining in regulation. Darche threaded a pass from behind the net to Wanvig near the bottom of the left circle. Wanvig sent a shot top-shelf, stick-side for the game-winning goal.
Jonathan Boutin (28 shots, 27 saves) earned the victory in his fourth start in five days. Frank Doyle (31 shots, 29 saves) was saddled with the loss.
The Admirals were 0-5 on the power play. Lowell was 1-5.
The Admirals return to Norfolk with three games next week. The week will kick off with a 7:15 matchup against the Philadelphia Phantoms on Wednesday night. Wednesday night is also USA Hockey Night and Baxter's College Night.
