LOWELL, Mass. - The Lowell Devils once again battled back from an early deficit only to allow to a late goal that sealed a 2-1 win for the Norfolk Admirals in front of 1,775 at the Tsongas Arena on Sunday.
Barry Tallackson had evened the contest at 1-1 when Norfolk's Rob Klinkhammer went to penalty box for high sticking in opening minutes of the second period. After Stephen Gionta separated defenseman Dan Jancevski from the puck with an open-ice shoulder check, a one-touch pass from Paul Vrana found Tallackson alone on the far post for the easy tap-in at 2:43. Noah Clarke also notched an assist on Tallackson's fourth goal of the year.
Both squads would head into the final frame looking for the go-ahead goal and both sides were provided with quality opportunities. Frank Doyle robbed Craig MacDonald on a shorthanded breakaway midway through the third period. In turn, the iron helped Norfolk netminder Jonathan Boutin not once, but twice as both Vrana and Benoit Mondou found post on a power play in the waning minutes of the stanza.
Kyle Wanvig, however, allowed Norfolk to slip ahead with 2:55 left in the contest as he cut from behind the near post and blooped a wrist shot into the top corner.
Doyle was solid in net from the onset as Lowell was outshot 15-3 in the first period. The only blemish in the first twenty minutes of hockey came with 3:17 left until the first intermission when Mathieu Darche bounced a loose puck in the slot past a screened Doyle. The Lowell netminder finished the contest with 29 saves.
The Devils were 1-for-5 on the man-advantage and a perfect 5-for-5 on the penalty kill.
