Oklahoma City Comets News Release
Oklahoma City - The Reno Aces hit four home runs and held the Oklahoma City Dodgers to one hit as the Aces defeated the Dodgers, 6-1, Saturday night at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
The Dodgers avoided a shutout by scoring a run in the bottom of the ninth inning when Zach Reks drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs, however five Reno pitchers combined to hold Oklahoma City to one hit on the night.
All six of the Aces' runs scored via home run, including a two-run homer by Kevin Cron in the fifth inning. The homer was Cron's 32nd of the season, which tied the Aces' single-season franchise record and kept him tied for the PCL lead in home runs this season.
Andy Young quickly put Reno in the lead, when he led off the second inning with a solo home run out to left field and onto the Budweiser Deck as the teams opened a four-game series. Juniel Querecuto connected on a two-out, two-run homer out to right field in the third inning to extend Reno's lead to 3-0.
A one-out single by OKC's Zach McKinstry in the bottom of the third inning would end up as the Dodgers' lone hit of the night. Later in the inning with two outs, back-to-back walks by Gavin Lux and Connor Joe loaded the bases. With Jedd Gyorko at bat on Major League rehab assignment, a pitch by Reno's Taylor Clarke got past catcher Alberto Rosario. McKinstry raced home, but was thrown out at the plate to keep the Dodgers off the scoreboard.
Cron's two-run homer in the fifth inning extended the Aces' lead to 5-0. Domingo Leyba belted a solo homer out to left field to lead off the seventh inning and extend Reno's lead to 6-0.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Joe walked, DJ Peters was hit by pitch and Kyle Garlick walked to load the bases with two outs for the Dodgers. Reks then drew a walk to bring home a run for Oklahoma City and cut Reno's lead to 6-1. With the bases loaded again, and after a Reno pitching change, Ben Taylor struck out Dodgers newcomer José Lobatón to end the game and pick up his second save with the Aces.
Reno pitcher Braden Shipley (4-4) was credited with the win, notching two strikeouts over 3.0 scoreless and hitless innings after entering the game in the fourth inning.
Dodgers starting pitcher Daniel Corcino (8-5) was charged with the loss, allowing five runs and five hits, including three home runs, four walks and eight strikeouts.
Saturday's loss snapped a three-game winning streak for Oklahoma City (55-62) and marked the second time this season the Dodgers were held to one hit (previously May 22 at New Orleans). Reno outhit the Dodgers, 8-1.
The Dodgers and Aces (56-62) continue their series at 6:05 p.m. tomorrow on a Chaparral Energy Family Sunday, featuring many family-friendly activities, such as pregame player autographs and postgame kids run the bases.
