Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska â The Alaska Aces have agreed to terms on one-year contracts for the 2003-04 season with a pair of rookies, former UAF goaltender Lance Mayes and winger Shane Palahicky.
Palahicky played four years at Division I Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. He registered a career-best 20 points on seven goals and 13 assists last year as the Big Red won the ECAC championship and advanced to the Frozen Four as the number one-ranked team in the nation. In 2002, the six-foot, 190-pound Palahicky scored seven goals and assisted on 10 others for a Cornell club that won 25 games and came up just one game shy of the Frozen Four.
Mayes was part of a major turnaround at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks, as the Nanooks put together back-to-back winning seasons in his junior and senior campaigns. The 25-year-old British Columbia native posted a 13-9-5 record with a 3.16 goals against average over his final two seasons at UAF as compared to 8-29-6 during his freshman and sophomore seasons, despite actually having a better GAA (3.12).
"Shane's been great in camp so far and has size and skill to go along with experience in playing big games," said Aces head coach Davis Payne. "I think Lance gives us a terrific alternative in goal to Dan Murphyâyou need two solid goalies if you're going to sustain success over a 72-game schedule."
Alaska made its initial cuts after this morning's two and a half hour practice. A pair of former Aces, goaltender Ryan Person and winger Pavel Bacho, were among five players released as the club's training camp roster shrunk to 26.
The Aces make their debut at Sullivan Arena as training camp tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. Alaska will be on its home ice Friday and Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. against the Trenton Titans, who arrived in Anchorage this afternoon. The Aces open regular season against the Fresno Falcons on October 24 at Sullivan at 7:00 p.m. Alaska has sold 1,177 season tickets to date, 366 more than the club sold for the entire 2002-03 campaign.
